Our community is rich in history dating back to 1844. When the Long Island Rail Road was seeking a quick route to Massachusetts by use of their ferry off Orient Point. The Long Island Rail Road laid tracks that stretched from the NY City line, across Long Island, East to Greenport, and through the town of Medford. A station house was built on the corner of Stage Road (Route 112) and what was to become Railroad Ave. Mr. Jerome Beck became the first station master and lived behind the station house.
Many residents still living in Medford recall the stories their parents and grandparents told them about growing up here in the early years. These residents tell memories of children sitting around the old potbelly stove in the waiting room of the train station listening for the whistle, which would tell them the steam engine locomotive would soon be approaching with the mail and goods for local merchants. Neighboring towns such as Patchogue, Bellport, and Yaphank and as far away as Center Moriches had to come to Medford to pick up their merchandise. Medford at that time was called “The Hub of Long Island.
Things changed rapidly for Medford during those early years, and by the mid 1900’s Medford was still the town where people wanted to live. City dwellers purchased farmland acres for future homes. As the popularity of Medford grew so did the prospects of new schools for the children. Our town has entered the twenty first century with two elementary, and a middle school that provide quality education for the children of the Medford community, while the high school educates all the students of the Patchogue Medford School District.
